In the 1980s, the Italian magic-realist author, Umberto Eco published a collection of essays called TRAVELS IN HYPER REALITY. After all, I am sure you can distinguish what is real and what is not; or can't you? Like all that glorious trash, it represents not the reality of American life but the churning wheel of simulation in which the most outrageously false representation of reality wins. Umberto Eco, in his very readable essay”Travels in Hyperreality” argues that this kind of model serves as “An Absolute Fake”. Jesuits plot against Freemasons. Travels in Hyperreality is a conglomeration of essays from previous works and columns. While I was on my travels in hyper-reality I did stumble across this widely referenced infographic on the growth of Twitter. But I was sidetracked this weekend by a book of essays by Umberto Eco, entitled Travels in Hyperreality. Umberto Eco, in his essay "Travels in Hyperreality," confronts the American landscape with its obsession with fake representations of reality. Further reading: Umberto Eco, Travels in Hyperreality 1995. Nineteenth-century Europe—from Turin to Prague to Paris—abounds with the ghastly and the mysterious. The Eco reference is probably his collection of travel essays TRAVELS in HYPER REALITY. Umberto Eco and His Travels in Hyperreality. Of events that only exist in our imaginations and are not even being simulated by the mass media (also see Umberto Eco's Travels in Hyperreality (1990) for an insightful essay on the endless proliferation of “sports chatter”). Eco is the author of a famous essay from 1975 titled “Travels in Hyperreality,” which discusses his visit to several tourist attractions in the United States. SNAPSHOTS by Robbe-Grillet are short scenographic blueprints in detail. The essay that he subsequently wrote describing his trip, bore the odd title “Travels in Hyperreality,” which made it sound more like science fiction than the brilliant work of culture criticism it turned out to be.
